Download Options

Via the Mirador viewer, single images (JPEG) as well as the metadata in different formats can be downloaded (see Viewer Help).

You may also download almost all of our digital copies as a PDF in whole or in part.

In addition, the MDZ offers with DaFo (Daten für die Forschung) a worldwide accessible, free service for downloading high resolution images (JPEG format, 300 ppi) and corresponding text, if already available as machine readable version. Please check in each case under which usage rights a digital copy is provided. Commercial use of our digital copies may be subject to approval and fees. In this case please make use of our fee-based service Document delivery 'Altes Buch'.

DaFo includes most of our freely accessible online digital resources, among them many works of world’s cultural heritage. The maximum order size per day/user is limited due to the high amount of data that has to be retrieved and provided from the archive. Depending on the amount of data and the general service utilization the provision of the digital copies will take a minimum of 24 hours and up to 4 weeks.

PDF/DaFo Step by Step

  1. Go to the page of a digitized item. Click the download button in the upper right corner. Depending on the presentation, you will find a download icon (down arrow) there, which will lead you, among others, to the 'PDF/DaFo' option, or the 'Download' button.

  2. The download menu is now open. Please change the language from German to English by clicking on the flag beneath the word 'Download'. You can choose to download data in a lower resolution immediately (PDF document) or to order data via DaFo in a higher resolution, if the digital copy is released for this service.

  3. Please choose the scope of your download. The default is always set for the whole digitized object, but by changing the numbers you can also download a smaller part such as an article or a chapter. Please note the difference between image number (counting the scans) and page number (page counting in the scanned original).

  5. PDF: You can request the download by clicking the 'GO' button in the upper box. Depending on the size of the requested file the preparation can take a few moments. Once the download is ready, a link named 'Download (size of file)' appears on the download page. You can access the PDF file by either clicking the link with the left button of your mouse – thus opening it directly in a new tab or window of your browser – or by opening the context menu with the right button of your mouse and choosing 'save target as' to download the file to your device. If you click the button 'MORE PAGES' you will come back to the original download page in order to choose and download additional excerpts of a digitized item, e.g. a different article.

  6. DaFo: Enter your email address in the section for the JPEG-files. Your email address is used for notification. If you want to receive the text in additional to the JPEG files, please check 'with OCR text'.

  7. Please take note of the privacy policy of the Bavarian State Library concerning the personal data.

  8. Click the 'GO' button in the box below.

  9. A new page is opened.

  10. Fill in the captcha field with the characters you see in the image (in our example: JDAGU) and confirm your input by clicking the 'send' button.
