No distinction is made between upper and lower case letters.
Diacritical characters (e.g. é, ñ) are not considered in the search.
The German characters ä, ö, ü are also found with ae, oe, ue, sharp s (ß) with ss.
Wildcards are placeholders for any characters: The asterisk (*) stands for any number of characters, the question mark (?) for exactly one character.
monument* finds the terms 'monument', 'monuments', 'monumental' etc.
reali?e considers both the spelling 'realize' and 'realise'.
A phrase search with quotation marks finds hits in which the search terms occur exactly in the given character string. Call numbers are to be searched for as phrases, e.g.
'Bor. 301 k-1878'.
By adding the tilde (~) plus a number to a phrase, the maximum distance between the search terms is determined. For example, searching for
'georg friedrich'~2 finds hits with 'Georg Wilhelm Carl Friedrich', 'Georg Carl Friedrich' or 'Georg Friedrich', but also 'Friedrich Georg' (reversed order of the search terms).
Multiple search terms are linked with OR by default. Hits that contain all search terms are sorted further up.
A search with AND will only return hits that contain both search terms, e.g.
donau AND regensburg.
NOT is used to exclude search terms:
donau NOT regensburg leads to hits that contain 'Donau' but not 'Regensburg'.
Instead of AND and NOT, a preceding '+' and '-' can also be used. For example, the hits of the search
+donau +regensburg -passau contain the terms 'Donau' and 'Regensburg', but not additionally 'Passau'.
A different weighting of the individual search terms is done with '^' plus a number for the factor. For the search query
georg^2 friedrich, for example, the term 'Georg' is twice as relevant as 'Friedrich'.
A fuzzy search with tilde (~) returns not only the searched term but also similar spellings. For example,
bismarck~ will also find 'Bißmarck' or 'Bismark'. The search
bismarck~1 is fuzzier and brings more hits than
Please note: A search with wildcards or a fuzzy search takes significantly more time than an exact search.
